Mr. Hess has been in high-tech for
over 25 years. He has been an essential participant in the due
diligence and acquisition strategy development and execution at a number of
companies. Steve have been involved in raising venture capital for startup
companies and managing an incubator, a limited partnership, one LLP.
Additionally, Mr. Hess served as a technical advisor for a regional
investment bank. Steve has been CEO/President once, SVP 3 times
and a Managing Partner twice.
In the summer of 1995, Mr. Hess formed and
became Managing Partner of IStrategies International (IStrategies ). Since
then he has worked with clients (over 30) in strategic planning and market
evaluation, new product planning, product distribution, strategic alliances, and
interim management. He
has a database of contacts (4,200) that he uses to introduce numerous
companies to potential strategic alliance partners.
From 2000-2002, Mr. Hess acted as Managing Director at Incubator,
LP a
California Limited Partnership. The
Company was located in Berkeley and is both an incubator and a seed venture fund.
The Company was created 5 years ago by a group of entrepreneurs, VC's, University
Deans, Professors, and University of California, Berkeley alumni as a mechanism
for capitalizing on startup opportunities at the University of
California. His primary responsibilities are deal sourcing,
networking, deal screening, due diligence, and assisting portfolio company and
fundraising. While at
Incubator,
LP he formed the Berkeley Association of Venture Capitalists, a group of VCs who
went to the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1999-2000, Mr. Hess acted as VP of
Strategic Relationships and Acquisitions for USbid. His group did acquisitions,
developed strategic business relationships, helped rewrite the business plan,
and helped raise funding ($10 million). By closing 2 acquisitions and 6
strategic alliances, the strategic relationship group increased shareholder
value by $30 million.
In 1997-1998, Mr.
Hess was VP of Strategic Marketing for AboveNet an Internet co-location
and infrastructure company. His team developed the strategy for
acquisitions of infrastructure and managed all ISP partnerships. He managed the
marketing department whose responsibilities included product strategies, launch
programs, distribution programs, trade shows and seminars, and PR and
advertising. The company went public
in 1998.
From 1984 to 1992, Mr. Hess was a managing
partner at Creative Strategies Research International (CSRI), one of the most
prominent and established research firms in Silicon Valley. CSRI was/is a
business management and marketing research consulting company in the computer
industry. Its clients were primarily hardware and software vendors. Steve developed
and organized a number of conferences (i.e. Alliance Japan 1989 in the U.S. and in
Japan). He was the primary rainmaker for the CSRI. In 1992, Steve
left CSRI to pursue business interests in Russia and the U.K.
He has been an accredited journalist since 1989. In
1991, he was the editor of the International Computer Review, a newsletter
targeted to US. Industry executives seeking information concerning new emerging
markets. In 1985, he was editor of the newsletter Vertical Market Reports.
Mr. Hess has international
(USA, Europe, and Asia) marketing and strategic relationship experience in the
Computer/High Tech Industry. Mr. Hess gleaned his extensive insider’s knowledge of
international markets while working in Europe and Asia. Between 1989 and 1992
Mr. Hess lived in San Francisco Moscow, and London.
Finally, a true Renaissance man, Steve has had many careers,
including, entrepreneur,
rainmaker, industry (computer/Internet) analyst, journalist and art dealer.
A world traveler, Mr. Hess feels as comfortable in Europe and Asia as he does in the
U.S. In his spare time,
he likes to scuba dive, sail, surf and ski with his family.
He also maintains his passion for avant-garde Russian art
of the 1920s and 1930s.
